Co-curricular activities build character, teaching our students courage, self-control and persistence: how to compromise, how to negotiate, how to work in a team, how to lead, how to problem solve, as well as how to win with humility or lose with dignity.
Psychologist and expert on “grit”, Angela Duckworth, has found that grit is enhanced by participation in co-curricular activities. Grit is passion and sustained persistence for long-term meaningful goals. This is resilience and self-control in the pursuit of goals that takes months, years, or even decades, regardless of rewards or recognition along the way.
This sort of grit and resilience is essential both in and out of the classroom, and for life itself.
